CLASSROOM
SERVICES
Classrooms.utoledo.edu
The
Instructor’s skill and comfort level in the effective use of
technology is an important factor in providing a successful student
learning experience. By January 2004, many classrooms in HHS, RH, UH, MM and SM
will have been updated with state of the art technology. To facilitate effective use of this equipment,
faculty is encouraged to click here to visit our Virtual Classroom Tour and/or contact the staff at ext.2656 for personalized assistance in your
classroom or our training classroom prior to the first class.
The
Virtual
Classroom Tour allows faculty to actually view any
classroom, its seating configuration and number of seats, floor
plans of the building and the equipment available in respective
rooms.
The tour also provides links
to online tutorials for each piece of equipment in
preparation for actually using the technology.
This tool is presented as a way to assist educators in
selecting and scheduling a classroom based on instructional needs.
Additionally,
Classroom Support Staff offers instructors both online and in person
step-by-step instructions for using classroom equipment and we
provide suggestions for integrating technology supported learning
activities into your lesson plans.
You probably still have questions and we have
answers in our FAQ section…

Only daredevils wait till the last minute!
Even so we’ll do our best to honor your request, call
Classroom Support at ext 2656 to ensure placement of equipment for a
given time. As long as you’re calling us, why not schedule your
needs for the entire semester?
That eliminates a lot of the adventure but does ensure
you’ll have what you need, where and when you want it.

The software situation is responsible for a lot of
Excedrin headaches over the past year, so in order to minimize
confusion, classroom computers are now standardized with Windows
2000 and associated Office suite software applications such as Word,
Excel, Access, PowerPoint and the StarBoard software if applicable.
For specialized software: install it on your share
directory (H:) which will make it available after logging on to any
computer. Questions
regarding the use of specialized software should be directed to
Classroom Support at
ext 2656.

We know that you wouldn’t take a sailboat out on
Lake Erie without practicing first in a more controlled environment,
so we’re making ourselves available to arrange a practice session
on the equipment you will be using to ensure smooth sailing all the
way! Call ext 2656.

The Tech room can include a combination of:
- Computer
with network connection, keyboard and mouse
- Star

presented media or function as a white board to display the
instructors notes on screen)
- Plug-in
capability for instructor supplied laptop
- DVD

- ZIP
Drive
- TV/VHS
- Overhead
Projector
- Laser

12. Wireless Microphone
To learn exactly which equipment is available in a particular classroom
use the Virtual
Classroom Tour. If
you need additional equipment for your lectures, contact us
at ext 2656 and the proper accommodations will be made.

Unfortunately, UT does not provide this option.
But here’s the next best thing: By saving information from
the lecture to the share directory ( H: ) data can be easily
manipulated for printing, editing, email anytime, any place you can
log on.

Yikes! You like to live on the edge!!!
This is definitely not recommended. While our support
technicians may be able to assist you with simple connection
assistance, the hurried pace of the session combined with students
entering and exiting the room, asking questions of the instructor,
etc. is not conducive to an effective teaching/learning environment.
To ensure a successful learning experience for our
students and fewer terrifying moments for you, you’re encouraged
to schedule training prior to start of the semester or at least
during a time when interruptions are fewer and there is plenty of
time for questions to be asked and answered during a focused
training session.

Ah, a fan of Pedagogy!
Your students will be delighted! One resource is Academic Support:
contact Judy Stead at 530-4359, Mark Walker at 530-7712 or
Sue Benedict at 530-4404. These
folks will be more than happy to assist you with your lecture /
presentation ideas or they will be able to refer you to another
contact.
TOP
Sure, bring it on in!
There’s a guest PC hookup available in all of the tech
rooms on campus that will allow you to use your own laptop computer.
You can always call us ahead of time at ext 2656 just to make
sure there are no compatibility issues.
As long as your laptop has the standard VGA output
it should work fine. If you have any doubts as to compatibility,
please give us a call and we can determine if problems could be
encountered.

As the integration of instructional technology into
the university classroom has become more important, resources for
educating and assisting faculty in this new arena have become
crucial.
Enter the Starboard monitor—it’s fast and easy
to learn (we also think it’s fun) and the instructor gets to face
the class while using it. The
Starboard monitor is an interactive LCD panel
with XGA resolution and adjustable writing angles. The stylus pen
that is tethered to the monitor functions as a mouse and it can also
highlight, erase, and annotate over computer applications as well as
present live notes on a white board type display.
With the use of Smart Board technology and your
classroom computer, the ability to annotate over various
presentation material used in your lectures provides another
powerful and effective tool at your disposal.
The presenter can face the audience while the
presentation is projected onto a large screen display. Using the
StarBoard EM Pen the presenter can annotate, amend and save the
presentation. The presenter can design, draw and sketch directly on
the screen surface. Visit with us; we encourage instructors to explore
the potential of technology-supported learning activities for
interactive, productive student learning experiences.

Yes, it is very possible that, depending on the material used for
presentation, you may very well be infringing on certain copyrights.
As that question is currently beyond the scope of our purview, we
suggest using common sense combined with other informational
material regarding this matter. In the spirit of protecting our
collective tushes, we list
sites providing information on copyright issues:
http://lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/wp/ or http://www.templetons.com/brad/copymyths.html
TOP
Yes! In fact we encourage you to place your finished PowerPoint
presentation on your share directory (H:), which can then be easily
accessed after logging onto the tech room computer with your valid
logon information. In this way all computers will maintain a
consistent look and feel throughout the tech rooms campus wide.
Specialized software can be installed by contacting the technician
assigned to your building or by contacting our main office at ext
2636.
TOP
You bet, but since we suspect you’d rather not be adventurous in this
respect, please schedule at least 24 hrs ahead at ext 2656. All
equipment requests are dependent on that day’s availability and
since we don’t have a warehouse full of equipment, only the early
bird can rest assured that the request will be fulfilled. While
you’re calling us anyway, why not schedule for the entire
semester? Here’s
a list of portable technology:
DVD / CD Rom
ZIP Drive
TV/VHS
Overhead Projector
Laser Disk
Document Projector
LCD ceiling Projector
Slide Projector
Camcorder
